If you are thinking about adopting a Goldendoodle, you are probably wondering how long does a Goldendoodle live? Right away, you can know that a healthy Goldendoodle will live between 10 and 15 years.
Goldendoodles do have a wide average lifespan range. This happens because Goldendoodles can have one of many or many types of poodles integrated into their breed over generations.
The Goldendoodle is a fairly new breed, but there are breeders out there that have bred many generations of Goldendoodles. Let’s look at the life expectancy of Poodles and Golden Retrievers to see if this assessment makes sense.
How Long Does a Poodle Live?
There are two main sizes of Poodles. There is the Miniature Poodle and the Standard Poodle. A Miniature Poodle weighs under 20 pounds, and a Standard Poodle usually weighs over 40 pounds.
It turns out that Miniature Poodle breeds live longer than the larger varieties. If you care to gain a better understanding of why this is, please read my article titled, “The Longest living Dog Breeds.”
To make a long story short, smaller dogs outlive their larger counterparts. Scientists believe that this is mainly due to a gene that helps to regulate growth, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1). Small dogs have a different version of the gene. The overall growth of smaller dogs is halted, elongating the dog’s life expectancy.
That said, Miniature Poodles live between 13 and 15 years, and larger Poodle breeds live between 10 and 13 years. The average Poodle may live this long, but that does not mean yours will not live much longer.
Poodles, large and small, are both prone to health conditions. These conditions include hip, eye, and knee problems. Here is a piece that I previously wrote on this subject called “Medical Problems of Some of Our Favorite Dog Breeds.” Learn more about poodles life expectancy. https://luckysrescue.org/life-expectancy-of-poodles/
How Long Does a Golden Retriever Live?
Golden retrievers tend to be large dogs. They weigh over 50 pounds once they grow into adults. Golden Retrievers live between 10 and 12 years on average, and just like the Poodle, they have a myriad of possible health problems.
Golden Retrievers are well known for having hip problems. If you decide to adopt one, you should be on the lookout for other issues as well, like cancer and eye disorders. Just bring your dog to the vet on a regular basis, and you should be OK.
How Long Does a Goldendoodle Live?
As stated above, the average Goldendoodle lives 10 to 15 years. The dogs currently come in four standard sizes. They are:
They also come in a wide variety of coat textures and colors. That aside, the smaller breeds tend to live longer on average than the larger breeds, depending on the original Poodle the Goldendoodle hails from.
There is no known research on how the small version of the IGF1 gene could affect larger versions of the Goldendoodle. For example, a larger Goldendoodle may have a longer life span if, at one point, it was bred with a Miniature Poodle. At this point, differences in the lifespan of such a dog are only speculative.
